If we swapped the logos, would anybody notice?
When the work is different but the language isn’t, buyers have nothing else to compare. Price starts doing the sorting. And more marketing just puts more people in front of the same problem.
A senior diagnosis before your next marketing move.
Great work built this business. So did referrals, reputation, and being good enough that somebody told somebody else.
That works when the next customer already knows who you are. Eventually they don’t.
Now the business has to make sense to somebody who has never met you, never heard the story, and has no reason to fill in the blanks. That’s a different problem.
When the work is different but the language isn’t, buyers have nothing else to compare. Price starts doing the sorting. And more marketing just puts more people in front of the same problem.
Sometimes nobody is rejecting the business. Nobody new is finding it. A better website can make the room nicer without putting anybody new in it.
The interest was real. Somewhere between the first call and the contract, confidence leaked. A discount doesn’t fix doubt. It prices it.
If growth stops every time attention moves somewhere else, there isn’t much of a system yet. A new hire can share the pushing without fixing why everything needs pushing.
Most clients arrive holding one of two problems.
Those are the ones they feel first, but they’re not always where the problem starts. That’s why we look at all four.
See if the Outside Read fitsThe week is about narrowing the problem until we know what matters most.
Fifteen minutes to make sure the Read makes sense. If it doesn’t, I’ll tell you.
You send the few things buyers actually see. Website. Pitch. Proposal. Sales material. Whatever matters. I review it before we meet.
We walk through how somebody finds the business, understands it, compares it, and chooses it. Story. Reach. Conversion. System. We’re looking for the explanation that makes the rest of the problem easier to understand.
I bring the diagnosis back and we test it. We look at the assumptions, the evidence, and anything that doesn’t fit. If it still holds, we have something useful.
You leave with three things:
The answer might be positioning, a campaign, a rebuild, or a capability the business doesn’t have yet. That’s why the Read comes first.
You leave knowing what I think should happen next, what it would cost, and whether you need me for any of it. There’s no obligation to continue.

Twelve case studies
You know the business better than anyone. That’s the advantage, and it’s also why this gets hard to see.
You know what you mean. You know why the work is different. You know the decisions, tradeoffs, and years of experience sitting behind the offer.
The buyer only sees what makes it across.
I’ve spent twenty years working in that space between what a company knows itself to be and what the market can actually see. Porsche. Viasat. DIRECTV. The New York Times. Founder-led businesses where the wrong move costs real time and money.
Different scale, same basic problem.
Your business already knows plenty. My job is to figure out what matters to buyers and close the distance between the business you built and the business they experience.

You might. But before you hire somebody to make something, it helps to know what problem you’re paying them to solve. Otherwise you can get very good work aimed at the wrong thing.
Good. The Read might confirm it, sharpen it, or show that what you’re seeing is where the problem appears rather than where it starts. Any of those is useful.
Enough to identify the strongest explanation, support it with evidence, and decide what deserves attention first. That’s the job.
Whatever makes sense. Handle it internally. Take the recommendation to another partner. Hire a specialist. Or ask me to help with the next phase. The Read doesn’t require the sequel.
The Read costs $1K. The next marketing decision might cost $10K. Or $100K. Worth knowing what problem you’re solving first.
